The English  word spirit
 (from Latin spiritus "breath") has many differing meanings and connotations, most of them relating to a non-corporeal substance contrasted with the material body.

 (from Latin spiritus "breath")  ( มาจากภาษาลาติน spiritus ที่แปลว่า breath  บรี๊ธ หรือลมหายใจ 

has many differing meanings มีความหมายหลายอย่างทั้งทางตรง

and connotations,และความหมายทางอ้อม 

most of them  เกือบทั้งหมด
 relating to จะเกี่ยวพันกันกับ

a non-corporeal substance  นามธรรม หรือวิญญาณ

 contrasted with  ตรงกันข้ามกับ

the material body รูปธรรม หรือสังขาร.....

นอกเหนือจากนั้นยังแปลว่า ความรู้สึก

ทั้งดีทั้งไม่ดี 

ถ้าเป็นฝ่ายธรรม ก็เรียกว่า Holy Spirit หรือวิญญาณของเทวดา ถ้า bad spirit หรือฝ่ายอธรรม  ก็คือปีศาจนั่นเอง

เรื่องนี้อาจจะยากสำหรับคนบางคนแต่ก็น่าสนใจเพราะมีศัพท์ที่น่าสนใจมาก

Christmas spirits
LATE one Christmas Eve, three mates were on their way home from a party when a car lost control and smashed into them.
Unfortunately, all three died instantly and they went to Heaven.
Standing before the Pearly Gates, they were greeted by St Peter who said they could enter, but with one condition.
“As it is Christmas Eve, you must each offer me a Yuletide token before you may pass through the Gates.”
The first guy dug around in his pockets and pulled out a set of keys which he shook about.
“These represent jingle bells,” he tried. Nodding, St Peter allowed him to pass through the Gates.
The second guy kicked off his shoe and held up a sock.
“Er, this is a Christmas stocking, he said hopefully.
Surprisingly, St Peter stepped aside and he too. was allowed to enter Heaven.
The last bloke searched through his pockets but came up with zip. Eventually, St Peter grew weary of waiting.

“What is your Christmas token?” he asked.
The last bloke sighed and pulled out a pair of undies.
“Well these were Carol’s.”

and smashed into them. แล้วก็พุ่งเข้าชนพวกเขา
Unfortunately, โชคไม่เข้าข้าง

died instantly ตายคาที่ ( ถ้าเป็นภาษาไทยก็ต้องบอกว่า เด๊ทสะมอเร่ )

 and they went to Heaven. และแล้วทั้งหมดก็ไปสวรรค์

Standing before  ในขณะที่ยืนอยู่หน้า

 the Pearly Gates, ประตูสวรรค์ ( ประตูที่ทำด้วยไข่มุก เค้าว่าสวยมาก ใครอยากเห็นก็ตามสบาย อย่ามาชวนผม )

 they were greeted ทั้งหมดได้รับการต้อนรับ

by St Peter โดยเซ๊นปีเตอร์

who said ที่บอกว่า

they could enter, ทุกคนเข้าไปได้

 but with one condition. แต่มีข้อแม้ว่า
“As it is Christmas Eve, วันนี้คือวันคริสต์มาส

 you must each ทุกคนจะต้อง

 offer me a Yuletide token เอาสัญลักษณ์คริ๊สต์มาสมาโชว์ให้ดู

(Yuletide หรือYule Time  มาจากภาษาเยอร์มัน แปลว่าเฉลิมฉลองวันสำคัญทางศาสนา ส่วน โท๊คเค่น token ก็คือเหรียญที่ทำขึ้นโดยเฉพาะสำหรับเล่นเครื่องเล่นเกมส์ หรือ ขึ้นรถลงเรือ )

before you may ก่อนที่พวกเธอจะได้รับอณุญาตให้

 pass  through the Gates.” ผ่านประตูสวรรค์เข้าไป
The first guy ไอ้หนุ่มคนแรก

dug around in his pockets ล้วงเข้าไปในกระเป๋าควานหา

and pulled out a set of keys แล้วก็ดึงเอาพวงกุญแจออกมาพวกหนึ่ง

 which he ซึ่งเค้าก็

shook about. สั่นมันกรุ๊งกริ๊ง

 Nodding, พยักหน้าหงึกๆ

allowed him อนุญาตให้เค้า

 to pass through the Gates. ผ่านประตูสวรรค์ไปได้
The second guy ไอ้หนุ่มคนที่สอง

kicked off his shoe เตะรองเท้าออก

and held up a sock. แล้วก็ยกถุงเท้าชูขึ้นมา
“Er, เอ้อ...

this is นี่คือ

a Christmas stocking, คริ๊สตมาส สต๊อกกิ้ง ซึ่งก็คือถุงเท้าที่เด็กๆเอามาแขวนไว้เพื่อให้ ซาตาคล๊อส ใส่ของขวัญ

 he said hopefully. เขาพูดด้วยลักษณะที่มีความหวังเต็มเปี่ยม
Surprisingly, คิดไม่ถึงว่า

stepped aside ได้ฉากออกข้างๆเปิดทาง

and he too.แล้วเขาก็เป็นอีกคนหนึ่ง

 was allowed ที่ได้รับอนุญาต

to enter Heaven. เข้าไปในสวรรค์ได้
The last bloke  ไอ้หนุ่มคนสุดท้าย

 searched through ค้นไปจนทั่ว

 his pockets กระเป๋าของเขา

 but came up with zip. แต่ก็ไม่เจออะไร

 (zip =  zipper เป็นแสลง = nothing )

Eventually, สุดท้ายแล้ว

 St Peter นักบุญเซ็นต์ปีเตอร์

 grew weary ก็เริ่มมีอาการเบื่อหน่าย

 of waiting. การรอคอย

“What is your Christmas token?”  อะไรคือสัญญลักษณ์คริสต์มาสของแก

 he asked. ท่านถามขึ้น
The last bloke ไอ้หนุ่มคนสุดท้าย

sighed ถอนหายใจ

and pulled out แล้วก็ดึง

 a pair of undies. กางเกงในออกมาตัวนึง ( อย่าลืมนะว่า กางเกงในก็คือ นามที่เป็นพหูพจน์ กางเกงก็เหมือนกัน A pair of genes ก็คือกางเกงยีนส์ตัวหนึ่ง กรรไก ก็เหมือนกัน)
“Well these were Carol’s.”  เอาละนี่คือของแครอล

( Carols by candle light คือประเพณีจุดเทียนร้องเพลงร่วมกัน ในวันคริสต์มาส  ... ไอ้หนุ่มคนนี้มีแฟนชื่อแครอล เลยเอามามั่วเพื่อขึ้นสวรรค์
