Maid of honour
The maid of a rich couple approached the wife to ask for a pay increase. Annoyed, the snobby wife thought she’d take her down a peg or two.
“Why do you think you deserve a pay increase, Rosa?
“There are three reasons,” began the maid. “Firstly, I’m a better cook than you.
“What?” said her mistress in disbelief? “Who told you that?”
“Your husband did, Miss. Secondly, I’m better at cleaning than you.”
Furiously, the wife spluttered, “And who told you that?”
“Your husband did, Miss.”
Ignoring the wife’s icy stare, the maid said, “Lastly, I’m better in bed than you.”
Gnashing her teeth, the wife hissed, “Did my husband tell you that, too?”
“Oh no, Miss. The gardener did.”
Rosa received a substantial pay increase the next day.

ในเรื่องนี้ Maid ก็คือสาวใช้  ส่วน honour ก็คือคนซื่อ

the wife ฝ่ายภรรยา

 to ask for เพื่อขอ

a pay increase. ขึ้นเงินเดือน

Annoyed, หมั่นใส้และก็รำคาญ

the snobby wife ภรรยาที่เป็นคนเจ้ายศเจ้าอย่าง ( ตามประสาไฮโซ)

thought คิดในใจว่า

she would take her down a peg or two. หล่อนจะเคี่ยนเธอให้ร่วงได้ด้วยเหตุผลไม่มากก็น้อย ( a peg or two เป็นสำนวนจินตนาการณ์คือปักหมุด)

“Why do you think ทำใมเธอคิดว่า

you deserve เธอสมควร

a pay increase, ที่จะได้รับการขึ้นเงินเดือน

 Rosa? จ๊ะ โรซ่า
“There are three reasons,” มีสามเหตุผล

began the maid. สาวใช้เริ่มอารัมภบท

 “Firstly, เรื่องแรก

 I’m a better cook than you. หนูทำอาหารเก่งกว่าคุณนาย
“What?” อะไรนะ

said her mistress คุณนายพูดแบบ

in disbelief? ไม่อยากเชื่อ

“Who told you that?” ใครบอกเธอ
“Your husband did, Miss. สามีคุณนายบอกชั้นคะ...คุณนาย

 Secondly, เรื่องที่สอง

I’m better at cleaning than you” หนูทำความสอาดบ้านได้ดีกว่าคุณนายคะ

Furiously, ฉุนขาด

 the wife spluttered, คุณนายตวาด

“And who told you that?” หมาตัวใหนบอกเธอ( แปลแบบไทยๆ)
“Your husband did, Miss.” สามีคุณนายบอกกับหนูคะคุณนาย
Ignoring the wife’s icy stare, ไม่สนใจสายตาอันเย็นชาของคุณนาย

the maid said, สาวใช้ก็พูดต่อว่า

“Lastly, ข้อสุดท้าย

I’m better in bed than you.” เรื่องบนเตียง หนูก็เหนือกว่าคุณนาย
Gnashing her teeth, กัดฟันกรอดๆ ( gnashing ตัวนี้ ตัว g ไม่ออกเสียง อ่านว่า แน๊ชชิ่ง)

 the wife hissed, คุณนายส่งเสียงฮื่อ

“Did my husband tell you that, ผัวชั้นบอกแกแบบนั้น

 too?” ด้วยซิถ้า
“Oh no, ไม่ใช่คะไม่ใช่คะ

 Miss. คุณนาย

The gardener did.” คนทำสวนเค้าบอกมา
Rosa received โรซ่า ได้รับ

 a substantial pay increase การขึ้นเงินเดือนก้อนใหญ่

 the next day. ในวันต่อมา
