Fishy story
One overcast, miserable day, a
raggedy old man stood outside an
up market pub with a wooden rod,
dangling a string into a big puddle.
After seeing the old fellow stare
intently into the puddle for what
seemed like ages, a young, well-off
man in a suit came over and asked
what he was doing.
"I’m fishing," the old man replied.
The suit instantly felt sorry for the guy, who was probably a nutcase.
"Poor guy," he thought, and decided to invite him into the pub for a beer.
Once inside, the young guy tried to make small talk.
"So,’ he said kindly, pointing to the fishing rod, "how many have you caught?"
The old codger grinned, "You’re the eighth today."

Fishy story เรื่องคาวๆ ส่วนมากจะใช้ในเรื่องชู้สาว แต่มาใช้ในเรื่องนี้ คือเอามาล้อเลียน เป็นเรื่องของปลาๆ มาดูกันว่าอะไร
One overcast, วันที่มืดมัวสลัวหมอง ( หมายถึงวันที่ไร้แสงเแดด ท้องฟ้ามืดมนเมฆหมอกดําทมึน ฝนทําท่าจะตกแหล่มิตกแหล่ ทั้งวัน)

miserable day, เป็นวันที่หมดอาลัยตายหยากโบ๋เบ๋ ไร้ชีวิตชีวา

a raggedy old man ตาแก่ที่แต่งตัวมอซอ ( rag แร๊กตัวนี้ก็ผ้าขี้ริ้วนั่นเอง )

stood outside ยืนอยู่หน้า

an up market pub ผับชื่อดัง หรือผับของพวกไอโซปานนั้น

with a wooden rod, พร้อมกับไม้ยาวๆ ( แบบคันเบ็ด)
dangling a string มีสายห้อยลงไป

into a big puddle. ที่แอ่งนํ้าขนาดใหญ่บนถนน
After seeing หลังจากที่เฝ้ามอง

the old fellow สหายเฒ่า

stare intently จ้องมองอย่างใจจดใจจ่อ (intent = intention= enthusiastic อ่านว่า เอนตูสิแอ๊สติก แปลว่า กระตือรือล้น )

into the puddle ลงไปในแอ่งนํ้า

for what seemed like ages, เป็นเวลานาน ( for what seemed like ages = for long long time




คือสํานวน)
   a young, ไอ้หนุ่ม

well-off man คนมีกะตังค์

in a suit ใส่สูธ

came over เดินเข้ามาหา ( ตาแก่)

and asked แล้วก็ถาม
what he was doing. ว่าแกกําลังทําอะไร
"I’m fishing," ข้ากําลังตกปลา

the old man ตาแก่

replied. ตอบ
The suit ไอ้หนุ่มใส่สูธ

instantly felt sorry รู้สึกสงสารขึ้นมาทันที ( เหมือน instant coffee อินสะแต๊น คอฟฟี่ ปานนั้น)

for the guy, สําหรับคนแบบนี้

who was probably a nutcase. คนที่เข้าข่ายศรีธัญญา (probably= แหงๆ a nutcase = ศรีธัญญา)
"Poor guy," คนที่น่าสงสาร

he thought, เขาคิดในใจ

and decided to แล้วก็ตัดสินใจ

invite him เชิญเค้า

into the pub เข้ามาในผับ

for a beer. มาดื่มเบียร์
Once inside, หลังจากที่เข้ามาในผับแล้ว

the young guy ไอ้หนุ่ม

tried to make small talk. พยายามหาเรื่องคุย
"So,’ เอาละ

he said kindly, พูดแบบคนใจดี

pointing to ชี้มือไปที่

the fishing rod, เบ็ดตกปลา

"how many กี่ตัวแล้ว

have you caught?" ที่ลุงตกได้
The old codger เฒ่าทารกจิวแป๊ะธง ( old codger แปลว่าเฒ่าทารกจริงๆ ( amusing old man หรือ eccentric old man เฒ่าประหลาดขี้เล่น ซึ่งก็ตรงกับลักษณะของจิวแป๊ะธงชัดๆ)

grinned, ยิ้มน้อยๆ

"You’re the eighth today." มึงเป็นตัวที่แปดของวันนี้
