Kidding around

เรื่องนี้คือ หนึ่งในหลายๆตัวอย่างของคําถามที่ว่าทําใมคนไทยเรียนภาษาอังกฤษไม่รู้เรื่อง เรื่องนี้แม้แต่อาจารย์ที่จบปริญญาเอกของ มหาวิทยาลัยต่างๆในเมืองไทย ก็ไม่มีทางที่จะเข้าใจ หรือพยายามที่จะเข้าใจ เพราะความหมายมันลึกซึ๊งเกินที่อาจารย์พวกนี้จะรู้เรื่อง ทั้งที่ศัพท์ก็ง่ายๆ ลองอ่านดู ถ้าคุณเข้าใจ แสดงว่าคุณเก่งกว่าอาจารย์พวกนั้น

Kidding around
A woman walks into a Social Service office with 15 kids in tow.
‘Wow!’ the social worker exclaims. ‘Are they all yours”
Yeah,’ sighs the mother, having heard the question a thousand times before. She says. Sit down, Terry.’
The children rush to find seats.
Well, says the social worker, ‘I’ll need all of your childrens names
‘This ones my oldest — he’s Terry. And this is my youngest — she’s Teri.’
The social worker raises an eyebrow but continues writing ‘And here we have Terry and Teri.
All right! interrupts the social worker. I think I’m seeing a pattern. Are they all named Terri or Terry?’
‘Yes.’ says the mother ‘It makes my life easier. When it’s  time to get them out of bed and ready for  school, I yell, Terry! And when it’s time for dinner, I just yell Teri and they all come. And if I need to stop the kid who’s running into the street, I just yell ‘Terry!’ and they all stop.”
The social worker thinks this over, then wrinkles her forehead and says tentatively, “But what if you just want one kid to come, and not the whole bunch?”
“Then I use their surnames.”

คิดดิ๊ง กับ โจ๊กกิ๊ง เหมือนกันคือล้อเล่น แต่ในเรื่องนี้ หมายถึงเด็กๆเต็มไปหมด เป็นการใช้ภาษาแบบ เล่นลิ้น
A woman ผู้หญิงคนหนึ่ง

walks into เดินเข้าไปใน

a Social Service office สำนักงานบริการสังคม หรือสำนักงานผดุงความมั่นคงครอบครัวของประชาชน

with 15 kids in tow. พร้อมกับเด็กๆสิบห้า เดินตามกันเป็นงูกินหาง ( tow แปลว่าลากจูง ดูรูป tow truck)

‘Wow!’ โอ้โฮ

the social worker พนักงานผดุงสังคม

exclaims. อุทานขึ้นมา

‘Are they all yours” ทั้งหมดนี่เป็นลูกคุณทั้งนั้นเลยใช่มั๊ย
Yeah,’ ใช่แล้ว

sighs the mother, คุณแม่ถอนหายใจ

having heard จากการได้ยิน

the question คำถามแบบนี้มา

a thousand times นับเป็นพันๆครั้ง

before.มาแล้ว

 She says. หล่อนบอกว่า

Sit down, นั่งลง

Terry.’ เทอรรี่
The children rush เด็กๆต่างก็รีบ

to find seats. วิ่งหาที่นั่ง
Well, เอาละ

says the social worker,พนักงานบริการสังคมบอก

 ‘I’ll need ฉันต้องการ

all of your childrens names รายชื่อเด็กของคุณทุกคน
‘This ones my oldest คนนี้คนที่โตที่สุดของฉัน

 — he’s Terry. แกชื่อ เทอรรี่

And this is และคนนี้

my youngest คนที่เล็กที่สุดของฉัน

— she’s Teri.’ เธอชื่อ เทอริ
The social worker พนักงานบริการสังคม

 raises an eyebrow ขมวดคิ้วอย่างงุนงง

 but continues writing แต่ก็ยังเขียนต่อไปเรื่อยๆ

 ‘And here แล้วนี่

we have เรามี

Terry and Teri. เทอรี่ กับเทอริ
All right! เอาละ

interrupts the social worker.พนักงานบริการสังคมพูดขึ้น

 I think ผมคิดว่า

I’m seeing a pattern.ผมพอจะเห็นรูปแบบแล้ว

 Are they all ทั้งหมดนี้

named ชื่อ

Terri or Terry?’ เทอริ หรือ เทอรี่
‘Yes.’ ใช่แล้ว

says the mother คุณแม่พูด

‘It makes my life มันทำให้ชีวิตฉัน

easier. ง่ายขึ้น

When it’s  time ตอนที่จะ

to get them เอาพวกเค้า ( ปลุกให้ตื่น)

out of bed ออกจากเตียง

and ready for  school,แล้วก็พร้อมที่จะไปโรงเรียน

 I yell, ฉันก็ตะโกนว่า

Terry! เทอรี่

And when it’s time แล้วก็ตอนที่ถึงเวลา

for dinner, อาหารเย็น

 I just yell ฉันก็เพียงแค่ตะโกน

Teri เทอรริ

and they all come. ทุกคนก็จะมา

And if และถ้าหาก

I need to stop ฉันต้องการหยุด

 the kid เด็ก

who’s running ที่กำลังวิ่ง

into the street, ลงไปที่ถนน

 I just yell ฉันก็เพียงแค่ตะโกน

‘Terry!’ เทอรรี่

and they all stop.” แล้วทุกคนก็จะหยุด
The social worker พนักงานบริการสังคม

 thinks this over, คิดไปคิดมา

 then จนกระทั่ง

wrinkles her forehead หน้าผากเธอย่น

and says แล้วก็พูดแบบ

 tentatively, ลังเล ไม่แน่ใจ

“But what if you ถ้าหากว่าคุณ

just want ต้องการแค่

one kid to come, เด็กคนเดียวให้มาหา

and not แล้วก็ไม่ใช่

 the whole bunch?” ทั้งขโยง
“Then ถ้าเป็นอย่างงั้น

I use their surnames.” ฉันก็เรียกนามสกุลเขา

 ผู้หญิงคนนี้ พาลูกๆไปสํานักงานบริการสังคม เพื่อจัดการเกี่ยวกับเงินเดือนเด็ก ตามกฏหมายสากลสหประชาชาติ ประเทศใหนที่เด็กไม่มีเงินเดือนกิน จะถูกนานาชาติเหยียดหยามให้ตํ่าต้อย ไม่มีเกียรติในสังคมโลก ฝรั่งจะเรียกว่า Third world country.หรือโลกที่สามที่สี่ ประเภทนั้น อย่างที่คนไทยเรียกว่ากะลาแลนด์ 
      ต่างประเทศ เด็กมีเงินเดือนกินทุกคนตั้งแต่เกิด ที่เรียกว่า Child Benefit หรือเงินส่วนแบ่งผลประโยชน์เด็กจากภาษีที่รัฐบาลเก็บไป เงินพวกนี้ หมาคาบไปแดกหมด

      ..คําศัพท์คํานี้ คนไทยไม่มี นอกจากคํานี้ ยังมีคําศัพท์อีกมากมาย ที่คนไทย เรียนไม่ได้ มันไม่ให้เรียน ดังนั้นต่อให้เป็นอาจารย์อะไรในเมืองไทยก็สอนคนไทยให้รู้ภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ นอกเหนือจากโดนกลั่นแกล้งวางยาจากชนชั้นสูงที่ไม่ต้องการให้เรารู้ภาษาอังกฤษลึกซึ๊ง มันต้องการให้รู้ แค่กูๆกาๆ แบบ One car come one car go, two car garden, two car โครม...ประเภทนั้น
